The Adopt-a-Granny scheme celebrated its 10th year of existence this month.
Sannie Visser originally started the scheme in 1990 when she realised that there were many state pensioners that only just got by on their monthly pension. She asked members of the Reformed Church for assistance and Jathira and Chop Chop Butchery were the first two businesses that were willing to sponsor the scheme. Two months later the Rotary Club pledged their support and these three organisations have been involved ever since.
Through the years other businesses, farmers and individuals joined with weekly donations.
With the help of Susan Buitendag, Rita du Plessis and Schalk and Freda Snyman, a weekly parcel with meat, bread, eggs, milk, soup, dry items and vegetables and fruit in season gets delivered at the doors of pensioners residing at Bobs, Phumula and state-subsidised houses.
Sannie said that they are most grateful towards the businesses that help by donating items or providing items to purchase at cost prize. “Our Lord has blessed this scheme and we thank Him for the strength to be able to do this every week,” There were times that they wondered if they would have enough to hand out but there always was.
At present 43 pensioners receive a food parcel every Thursday.
