The youth of Barberton has never before experienced such an awesome series of events. A whole week of dance, drama, activities and performances aimed especially at them. The first ever Kohin BarbertonYouth Week was recently held, predominantly at the high school. But many schools, especially those schools with a Kohin youth coach, were included in the events.
According to Rosa de Witt, youth coach, Kohin is a non-profit organisation who empowers the youth with hope and vision for the future, who provides answers to unique challenges that the youth face daily by placing the best-equipped youth coach on a full-time basis in a youth environment in order to address youth related issues through the launch of various programmes and projects. “The youth week was one such a project,” she said.
The youth were challenged to join the Acts 29 movement, where Christians boldly live lives that show the joy that Christ places in their hearts, that they take out the dirty laundry and live pure and upright lives and realise that God is a God of far more promise and expectation. The Kohin Acts Ambassadors service-year team was in town during the youth week and visited Barberton High and Primary School, Mountainview Primary, Fairview Primary and Gateway Christian School
Parents, teachers and learners were all impressed by the professionalism and realism from which the team functions. Their performances addressed serious issues like popularity, self image, abuse, bullying, sexual activity, and especially our need for Jesus in our hearts. Learners of the high school and community members had the unprecedented opportunity to share their views and perspectives in workshops held on the Wednesday and Friday morning. The workshops were extremely effective and both presenter and learner received much value.
On the Friday afternoon a large number of youth gathered together for a march – “to exclaim that we can no longer stand mediocre Christianity” – it is time to join the movement!
“It is Kohin's hope that the Kohin Youth Week becomes a highlight on the school calendar and that it will grow to become a rich Barberton tradition,” Rosa concluded.
