The third descend to Barberton from Gauteng by the Team ST Club took place during the long weekend.
On Saturday 20 Ford Focuses and Fiestas were escorted into town. According to Peter van Vuuren, vice chairman of the club this has become a weekend break-away that all the club members look forward to. “We have four King series events during the year to determine the king of the club. The other three are day events but our first visit to Barberton three years ago was such a success that the club decided to make this weekend breakaway an annual event,” he said.
This weekend was the third leg in the series. The first was to determine the King of the Quarter Mile, then followed the King of Gymkhana and this weekend they crowned the King of Speed. The final leg in the series will be the King of Dyno later this year.
Barberton Ford was the main sponsors of the event and treated the club members to a braai Saturday evening.
On Sunday the King of Speed 3 was determined on the R40 close to the four way stop at Barberton Medi Clinic. Louis Schumane was the overall winner with a speed of 210 km/h over 700 metres. He participated in the Focus highly modified category. This was also a new record.
At the prize giving Joe Maritz, chairman, thanked the local traffic department for the necessary arrangements with the department of roads and transport as it was a provincial road that was closed for traffic while the racers had three opportunities to test their own and their vehicle’s speed ability. They participated in four categories.
The crowning and prize giving took place at Old Rock after yet another competition – to determine who the Barberton King of Bling was. The cars were judged on its looks, sound and overall feel. Dan Rampersadh was unanimously crowned as the King of Bling with Stefan Roos second and Nickel Heyns third.
