Barberton was invaded by soldiers during the weekend when three regiments executed their right to march through town with swords drawn, bayonets fixed, drums beating and colours flying.

On Saturday Regiment Botha, the Transvaal Scottish Regiment and the Witwatersrand Rifles held a parade at the war memorial in De Villiers Street. The Scottish and Witwatersrand brigades received the freedom of the town in the early 2000 and Regiment Botha in 2009, shortly after they relocated from Ermelo. The parade was lead by the Transvaal Scottish Pipes and Drums.

Not even the hiccups experienced with the sound system could dampen the spirit of pride the commanding officers and soldiers felt, and showed, as they proudly took the salute in front of the memorial.

Sgt Maj James Schravesande of the MOTHS read the code of conduct after which Pastor Thelma Trevenna did scripture reading and prayer. In his address the mayor of Umjindi, Cllr Richard Lukhele expressed his pride, honour and satisfaction to address the freedom of the town parade. He acknowledged the regiments, especially Regiment Botha for the contribution it had made, not only to the nation but the town.

Lukhele said that the granting of the freedom of a city or town dates back to the laws of ancient Rome. It was a capital offence for Roman legions to enter the city in formation or carrying weapons without permission, a law that continued into medieval times.

“In those days towns were walled for protection, so it was a great honour when military groups who gave heroic service were granted the freedom of the town. The great wooden portals of the town would open and allow them to march unhindered in formation, weapons at hand, through the town - A symbol of recognition and trust”.
