The aim at Aloe Ridge is to promote the environment, to engender a sense of the peace and quiet of the area and to encourage visitors to make full use of it by spending time outdoors.

The farm house is some 700m above sea level. We are situated in a very scenic, peaceful environment. There can be little better than just chilling out here of an evening, surrounded by birds and the peace and quiet.

We have 3 accommodation units at present, with plans to increase this over the short to medium term. They are designed for couples, with queen or twin beds; though arrangements can be made to accommodate families.

UNITS AVAILABLE

Self Catering with Bed and Breakfast as an option.

2 Double B & B or Self Catering Units Available. 1 unit has 2 single beds & the other has a double bed. Ensuite bathroom with showers, and kitchenette with bar fridge.   (Sleeper benches available for 2 children sharing).

1 Open Plan Unit Available --  with queen size bed & ensuite bathroom facilities (no shower). Bed and breakfast option, with bar fridge and tea/coffee making facilities available.

ImageWe offer bed and breakfast, though there are basic facilities in the units for light meals or take-aways. Other arrangements including packed lunches or evening braais and homemade dinners on request. For early risers packed breakfasts can be booked.

Self Catering Cottages

The 2 self catering cottages have been planned with family and group gatherings in mind. They are ideally situated to take in the spectacular views and placed away from the farmhouse to take advantage of the quiet, natural surroundings.

One cottage sleeps 6 - 2 bedrooms with twin beds and 2 day beds. The second cottage has 2 bedrooms; one with a queen bed - the other with twin beds. The main bedrooms in both cottages have bathrooms ensuite plus separate bathrooms for the other bedrooms.

ImageBarberton has an average of around 800mm of rain a year, and the temperatures can reach the high 30s in spring and summer. The humidity can rise to somewhat uncomfortable levels at times; then the swimming pool is a great place to be.

Aloe Ridge farm was a working establishment growing crops. It was left fallow for some years before we took over ownership. It is some 66 hectares in area. We have decided to reduce the amount of arable land and return it to as near original bush as possible. This will involve the removal of alien vegetation and the planting of indigenous shrubs and trees to replace them.

ImageBirdlife on the farm is actively promoted, by the planting of bird attracting trees and other plants. Re-vegetation of the old lands is also underway using trees and shrubs found in the area and if possible taken from plants actually on the property. This is an on-going task, and we are involved with the "Working for Water" project in reducing the infestations of these aliens.

ImageWe are developing a number of walks around the property that take advantage of the various biomes that can be found. These include grassland, savannah, bush (Sourveld) and the rocky ridges. However many of the birds can be seen around the garden. More than 230 bird species have been identified on the property. Details of monthly sightings are kept, and bird lists are available if you would like to record your sightings.

The garden is being designed to provide a number of varied habitats. All of which are "water wise" to reduce the pressure on the underground aquifer which is tapped by our borehole. Our herbs and vegetables are grown in an "organic" regime, for inclusion in our preserves and other products. We use no chemicals and sprays, insecticides or herbicides and grow everything in as "water-wise" manner as we can, collecting rain water for irrigation.
